The Cows

Our purebred native Shorthorn cattle are the foundation of our ranch. Their genetics can be traced back to 1820 through the herd books of the American Shorthorn Association. We have had many cow families over the years, but our cattle can also trace back to native bulls from Haumont Shorthorns in Broken Bow, NE. Due to careful management and emphasis on having heritage, Native animals,  Albaugh Ranch Shorthorn cattle are dual purpose, meaning that they can be used for both milk and meat purposes. Being dual purpose, our cattle are popular with homesteaders, families, and commercial cattlemen alike.

Through the years, we have placed a heavy emphasis on the following:

  1. Beef characteristics

  2. Plenty of milk

  3. Sound udders and teats

  4. Calm disposition and docility

  5. Structurally correct

  6. Rumen capacity to hold lots of forage

  7. Performance

  8. Moderate frame size - (Average weight is between 1000 - 1150 pound for cows in working condition)

  9. Each cow must be a productive member of the herd

By emphasizing each point above, and being selective with our cows, we believe we have cattle that are the total package. Therefore, they would work on and benefit any ranching operation.

We also cull hard on animals that are less than desirable. Any structural, reproductive, or disposition issues we see are quickly removed out of the herd.
